The Modern Shag

When we say shag haircut, what comes to mind? We’re envisioning 70’s grunge, Jane Fonda, bohemian-rock Stevie Nicks, and model and fashion icon Alexa Chung, and, as of late, we’re also envisioning so many of our wonderful clients that have recently stepped into the world of shag! We love to put a modern twist on the shag cut and for you it’s low-maintenance and easy to style when life gets busy.

The shag haircut was born in 1971 by hairstylist Paul McGregor. He created the first shag look for actress Jane Fonda and since then hundreds, if not more, variations have spiraled and evolved out of that first moment of genius. In the 80’s and 90’s, shags were known for their short layers and the iconic heaviness around the crown. The modern shag allows for a bit more style flexibility with softer layers all while maintaining that classic texture and volume that shags are known for.
